Check back in the spring of 2012 for exciting new adventures
of the Racing for Autism Team!

In September 2011, Racing for Autism competed in
the 10th Annual Targa Newfoundland rally race.
This world-class 2200km event saw many competitors from around the world.

Julie was the ONLY woman driver in Targa Newfoundland 2011.

DAY 1: Julie and Chad had an exciting first day in the Mustang. Passing a total of five cars during the race. Three of them in one stage alone! This is a great feat considering the cars are staggered 30 seconds apart in start times. Unfortunately Ray and Dale enountered Engine problems in the Shelby. The team at Avalon Ford attempted to repair the engine and get the Shelby back in the race for day two. Unfortunately after hours of work, they realized the engine repair would not be a quick fix.
The Shelby was out of the race.
Day 2: Ray jumped in the Mustang's passenger seat and got to experience first hand his wife's mad driving skills. During one stage, Julie came too fast into a turn and ended up off the road. Luckily it was a dirt road, not the ditch! They quickly got back on the road and even "zeroed" their time. Not loosing one second. Proudly moved up the ranks to 15th place, out of the 28 cars in Modern division. Not bad for a Newfie Girl!
Day 3: Ray and Julie started switching it up and taking turns driving. Julie would drive the fast flat out stages and Ray would do the more technical stages. It turned out to be a perfect partnership. Moving them up to 12th place.

Day 4: Ray was in the drivers seat and was passing cars all day, and right on the tail lights of other cars pushing them through stages where the turns were too tight to pass safely.
It was an exciting and fun day. They moved up to 10th place!

Day 4 was also a day that will go down in History for the people of Marystown, NL.......
This year Targa introuced a new concept, the "Hot Tour" It was a group of exotic cars,
They followed the same route as the racers, but no times were taken nor points scored.
They were not in the competition, they were here just to have fun.
Much to the excitement of the thousands of spectators.

One of these cars was a $1.5 million dollar Ferrari Enzo owned and driven by Zahir Rana. In Marystown, he hit a patch of loose gravel and landed in the Atlantic ocean. Thankfully no one was injured and both men walked away from the crash.

Ferrari Crash in Marystown

Day 5 tropical storm Maria blasted the Burin Peninsula and several races were canceled, the drivers took off down the highway and headed to the final races in Carbonear and Brigus. The torrential downpour of rain made the roads slick and visibility low, but the races continued.

The rain stopped long enough for the cars to cross the finish line at the waterfront in St. John's Harbour. The week started with 66 cars. 54 made it to the finish line. Less than half the teams got their "Silver Plate" for finishing within Trophy Times. Our team was one of them!! We also came in 9th in our Modern Division, 16th in the over all Targa Division.
Julie was nervous about being a navigator, as she only concentrated on the driving and didnt have any desire to sit in the passenger seat. But after fate took the shelby out of the competition, and Ray joined Julie in the car, Julie said it is the most fun she ever had yelling at her husband. They survived the week together, with many awesome memories, and talks about future races. The only problem will be fighting over who gets to drive...
